The City, the Devourer
The face of the city transforms, becoming a shadow of its former self. Concrete structures devour green spaces, while historic buildings lose their lustre in the presence of new ones, erasing the traces of what once existed.
Mahmoud Talaat wanders the streets of Cairo at night, his camera is always ready to capture intriguing scenes amidst the city's changes. Frames pass by him like fleeting ghosts; he quickly captures them, attempting to avoid constant surveillance. He wants to document everything before it disappears, contemplating the challenge of confronting an unfamiliar path that questions his identity.
Talaat is drawn to the stories of the places he passes by; every crack in the walls bears witness to the tales of those who walked these streets or sat on these benches. As buildings crumble, a part of him feels its own decay. His wanderings to document what is being lost could be seen as a symbolic protest or an attempt to hold onto his memories.
Can we preserve our memories while building a new world that documents and embraces the richness of the past? This book searches for answers to that elusive question.
